Having guinea pigs as a pet could be so fun. The fact that they are so cute and active will sure make you less lonely. Though the piggies are small, they require plenty of time, space and effort to take care for. If you want to have them as a pet, firstly you would find one of these guinea pig hutch ideas useful.

As what we said before, you will have to provide some space for your guinea pigs to live in. For each guinea pig, you should allow about 4.5 square feet of cage space. The larger the cage is, the happier they might be. Remember that they are super active so they need such big area to move and play.

Tips for a fine guinea pig hutch

Besides giving your little critters enough space to live in, another thing you should consider is the materials of the cage or hutch. Whatever material you use for the cage, make sure it has solid, soft bottom as guinea pigs have very fragile feet. So, provide fine protection for their little feet because flooring such as wire one may cause bumble foot.

Then, you will need a lid for the cage if the walls are at least 14 inches high. If the pens are high built, then the lid will not be so necessary. However, a lid is quite useful to protect your piggies, as it blocks something that might be thrown into the cage; moreover if you put the hutch outdoors and you have other bigger pets and especially little children in the house.

For guinea pigs are very sensitive to temperature, it’s better to keep them indoors. Yet, you’ll still need to expose them to the sunlight regularly. Thus, having a portable cage might be a good idea for you.

You can either use fleece liners with washable pads for the cage or give them nice bedding out of shredded paper or aspen. For a quick clean up, you can also try putting some peel & stick tile for the floor.
